It is not possible to offer effective counselling to people who are intoxicated. A practical solution here can be to offer such clients an early morning appointment, as long as they are not also drinking during the night. If this is not possible (heavy drinkers are often unable to rise early), another possible option is to arrange detoxification, providing the client is willing, before counselling takes place (see Chapter 8, ‘Detoxification (Detox)’). Clients who drink heavily but whose drinking conforms to a pattern can be somewhat easier to engage, particularly if drinking is regularly contained within a certain part of the day.
