Classical scheduling research has addressed two fundamental types of scheduling problems: static scheduling and dynamic scheduling. The static scheduling problem consists of a fixed set of jobs to be run. Typical assumptions are that the entire set of jobs arrive simultaneously and all work centers are available at that time. In dynamic scheduling problems new jobs are continually added over time. The research on the scheduling problem has produced extensive literature and even a general overview of the developed algorithms and techniques is not possible.

Production Activity Control Production activity control (PAC) concerns the execution of detailed material plans. It deals with the planning and release of individual orders to both factory and suppliers. PAC also takes care, when necessary, of detailed scheduling and control of jobs at the work centers on the shop floor (shop-floor monitoring and control systems, scheduling, and dispatching), and it takes care of purchasing and vendor scheduling (vendor scheduling and follow-up).
