We set out, then, to devise a test of the child’s incentive magnitude history differentially associated to relevant stimulus dimensions. This time, the within-subjects design was employed in training, and between-subjects in test (Witryol, Lowden, & Fagan, 1967). In the 40 trial training session, two identical or two different color cues yielded a high reward, the penny, and the same arrangements occurred for two form cues associated to the bean, the low reward; incentive magnitude-dimension associations were counter balanced for half of the subjects.

By using polar reward values from prior scaling (P. S. , 1967), they reasoned that incentive motivation, not physical cue properties of reward, would orient subjects to irrelevant position cues when they were correlated with incentive magnitude. This hypothesis was confirmed when equal and unequal rewards were correlated with position in their study of mental retardates. Acquisition in a two-choice, junk object selective learning task was more impaired in the rewards unequal group even though the comparative distinctiveness of the equal rewards was similar; furthermore, a large number of subjects made error position fixations to the high incentive side, the penny, as compared to the low incentive side, the lock washer, and as compared to fixations in the rewards equal group, which contained two incentives of intermediate value, the candy corn and the Chiclet.

To this, Siegel and his students have added the incentive motivational properties of rewards. The manipulation of reward cues and qualitative magnitudes in guiding children’s behavior may often lead to unexpected directions in a stimulus complex, however simply constructed, unless precision is sought and attained.
