There are important normative developmental trends in beliefs and commitments that we will touch on below, but there is sufficient individual variability in these beliefs and commitments that it is difficult to talk about universal goals of emotion regulation. We believe there is, however, an understudied set of beliefs that has important implications for emotion regulation.
