In a nutshell: Large, typically overlapping clusters of pale yellowish mushrooms with brown scales on the surface of the cap; large whitish pores under the cap; stem black near the base. Grows on elm, mainly, during the morel season in the spring. Cap: 2 1/2" to 12" across, and up to 1 1/2" thick; whitish to yel- lowish color and densely covered with brown scales; tender when young; tough when older.
Comes on about two weeks before the apple trees bloom; cap is black. • Yellow morel (M. esculenta) Fries. Look for it when apple trees are in bloom; cap color ranges from yellow-brown to tan. • Big foot (M. crassipes) Fries. Comes on with big foot morel or slightly later; cap ridges are white when young.
