Example text

When old, they often become saddle shaped. Someone with a powerful imagination long ago thought that they would make good riding saddles for fairies and such creatures. Hence the mushroom’s common name, after the old Greek name for a forest nymph. In a nutshell: Large, typically overlapping clusters of pale yellowish mushrooms with brown scales on the surface of the cap; large whitish pores under the cap; stem black near the base. Grows on elm, mainly, during the morel season in the spring. Cap: 2 1/2" to 12" across, and up to 1 1/2" thick; whitish to yel- lowish color and densely covered with brown scales; tender when young; tough when older.

Comes on about two weeks before the apple trees bloom; cap is black. • Yellow morel (M. esculenta) Fries. Look for it when apple trees are in bloom; cap color ranges from yellow-brown to tan. • Big foot (M. crassipes) Fries. Appears just after the apple trees stop blooming; usually colored like the yellow morel, but is grayer when young; can be huge. • White morel (M. deliciosa) Fries. Comes on with big foot morel or slightly later; cap ridges are white when young. Cap: 3/4" to 7" high, 3/8" to 3 1/2" wide; tan, black, or with white ridges, depending on the species; shaped like an 42 Wild Mushrooms of Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic upside-down ice cream cone, with deep honeycomb or netlike pits or wrinkles; hollow.

Such disdain may be understandable for the countless numbers of anonymous little brown mushroom species of unknown edibility. But to treat Coprinus variegatus this way seems downright unfair. It’s a large, common, attractive species that grows in conspicuous, dense clusters that can hardly escape anyone’s attention. Perhaps the scorn comes from the mushroom’s odor. Some mushroomers have suggested that it smells like a mixture of spoiled garlic and rubber tires. Or perhaps we don’t like the mangy appearance of the caps as the grayish skin flakes away, exposing a shiny bald surface.
